A 10-month-old child in Assam has been diagnosed with a human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, marking the first reported case this season, officials confirmed on Saturday. The child is currently being treated at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh and is said to be in stable condition.

HMPV cases in India: Days after HMPV infection cases were detected in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, etc., another case of the virus has been detected in Assam. A 10-month-old child tested positive of HMPV after he was admitted to the hospital with cough and cold symptoms, reported PTI, citing officials on Saturday.

hMPV typically affects older adults and infants, according to a TOI Lifestyle report. In older individuals, the symptoms can range from mild to severe and usually include cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and shortness of breath. Fever and fatigue may also occur.

Several cases of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) have been confirmed in India, affecting both infants and the elderly. In Bengaluru, infants aged 3 months and 8 months were detected with the virus, while the latest case involves an 80-year-old man in Ahmedabad.
